I anticipate that the store at 66 High Street will only close for a short period whilst works are carried out. During this time the most popular cards and gifts will be available to buy online and from the children’s store, which is situated next door at 68 High Street.

New collections will be arriving from mid September onwards.

My next Reiki 1 course will take place on the weekend of 27th/28th November in Haywards Heath, West Sussex. With a maximum of six students in the group, I allow plenty of time for students to learn in a safe, loving and nurturing environment. I provide ongoing support before, during and after the course.

No formal preparation is required, just an openness and willingness to learn, so students can relax and enjoy this special time knowing that the Reiki energy will work in a way that is perfect for them. I provide a variety of course materials to take away. Students will receive ongoing support after the course and are welcome to attend my Reiki shares and other courses as part of their development. Reiki 2 training will be available in 2011.

The course will be relaxed and informal and plenty of time will be allowed for discussion and the sharing of ideas. A light lunch and refreshments will be provided each day.

Reiki is a natural healing technique used to improve physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well-being. It can be used effectively on all illnesses and injuries to help reduce pain, side-effects and time needed to heal and it increases the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Reiki provides deep relaxation, promotes a sense of peace and well being and is a wonderful antidote to stress. It complements all other healing modalities and can restore a sense of balance within every area of life. It is a wonderful tool for self development and many students experience a noticeable shift in their awareness and a stronger connection to their intuition.

For further information about this and other courses I provide, please kindly contact me by email or make an enquiry through Heart & Soul.

We have so many amazing businesses right here in our village and its been a real priviledge to write about them. For the time being I shall be taking a break from this as other areas of my life need attention. Thanks for all the comments I have received from customers, I’m glad you have found the articles interesting.

Heart & Soul is really beginning to grow and I hope to be able to introduce my own stock into the shops over the coming months. My Reiki teaching is also taking me into new areas and its a pleasure to meet with new people interested in following this path.

I hope the magazine continues to go from strength to strength. Emma and David Tingley certainly add their own magic to life here in Lindfield.

The wonderful smell of roasted coffee and freshly baked bread often greets me on my way into the High Street each day. For me this has become synonymous with life in Lindfield.

Located at the Old Forge, within the courtyard in Denmans Lane, I discovered World Coffees; a thriving business that supplies coffee to a large number of restaurants, hotels, cafes and delis, far and wide. As well as wholesale, it provides a specialist mail order service for mainland customers and a dedicated retail service for local coffee connoisseurs. Owner Jackie McGahan and assistant Miranda Moolenaar invited me inside.

Jackie’s brother-in-law started World Coffees back in 1994 and the business moved to the existing premises some four years later. What started out as a hobby soon turned into a profitable enterprise. The mail order business began to serve a market that was expanding rapidly at that time and a later move into the wholesale market really helped the business to grow.

“We supply 18 different coffees” said Jackie, who is passionate about coffee and enjoys creating her own variety of blends. “All of our coffee beans are Arabica beans which are superior in quality and can only be grown under certain conditions. These beans provide the best flavour.”

“People are becoming much more discerning when it comes to coffee. It’s an affordable luxury and very much part of the culture we live in today. I like to provide a specialist service to all my customers. They tell us what they like and we create a blend of coffee that is unique to them” she continued. “Quality is paramount. Many of our beans come from individual growers and small cooperatives and are still harvested by hand. We know where our supplies are grown and for us it’s important to maintain that connection.”

World Coffees source their beans from many countries around the world, enabling them to offer their customers a broad selection to suit every palate, including Fairtrade and decaffeinated varieties.

Jackie explained “The green beans are delivered here by our coffee importers. We then roast the beans to get the best flavour. Each variety is different and requires a different length of time. In our 10 kilo roaster it takes about 23 minutes to roast the beans, but the last five minutes of roasting time are crucial and we have to keep checking the beans during this time. When the beans reach a certain temperature they crack and at that point we remove them from the roaster and cool them quickly. We then blend the coffees after roasting. There are a many different ways to then grind the coffee beans and our customers can tell us what they like.”

“Because we roast to order and grind the coffee just hours before delivery, we can guarantee the best tasting coffee. Quality, freshness and taste are our highest priority.”

The retail service is available from 9am-1pm on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday each week. You can find World Coffees at the Old Forge, Denmans Lane, Lindfield, telephone 01444 482140, or simply follow your nose!

I have never seen Lindfield High Street so busy. On Saturday the village was simply buzzing with people visiting the open house studios, the shops and cafes and the wide variety of events that had been organised at local venues. They included plenty of live performances and workshops on everything from cooking to treading the boards and playing steel drums to learning graffiti art.

The umbrella and sculpture trails were great and brought so much colour to the High Street. I think the beer festival at the Stand Up also went down really well, especially during the brief rain shower in the afternoon! Like anyone really needed an excuse?

One of my favourite displays was from the chainsaw carver and it really amused me to see several dogs trying to round up his beautifully crafted, life-size wooden sheep! One labrador just couldn’t work out why they wouldn’t move. The carved wooden fairy sitting on a swing closeby was absolutely magical.

As a sponsor, I especially enjoyed the preview evening on Friday where we had the opportunity to see the work of many local artists and meet the creators face to face. We were entertained by four performances which included the incredibly talented Lucy Songhi and dynamic young band, The Last Carnival.

On Saturday evening I attended the fashion show ‘Made Again’ where students had ‘recreated’ some incredible outfits from recycled materials. They were truly stunning! After the interval we were treated to a performance by professional opera singer Lucy Williams. This event was a sell out, so if you missed it I know that some of the designs will be on display at Borde Hill later in the summer. They are well worth seeing.

Alex from Artyfect, Sue from Borde Hill and myself had a tough time judging entries from the sculpture competitions early on Saturday morning. The standard was so high. I thought the umbrella trail was incredible. Local primary school students had used umbrellas and recycled materials to create themed sculptures that were displayed throughout the village. The winning entry from students at Blackthorns simply blew us away. Not only had they made the actual umbrella from pieces of willow, but each section of the large parasol had been decorated with a variety of recycled papers, using a number of different techniques. One section almost looked like stained glass. I loved the individual paper hands with children’s names that hung from one side - it was truly a group effort. Lindfield School had planted a ‘growing’ willow umbrella which will remain in the garden for many years to come.

In the sculpture trail older students were asked to create a piece for one of the shops on the High Street and I was delighted to see the entry for Bliss Hairdressers take first prize. Students from Burgess Hill School for Girls had created this amazing design, which even used recycled shampoo bottles! It was a tough choice between first and second. After much deliberation we decided upon the order and second prize was awarded to the robot for Kieran James Designs. This also came from Burgess Hill School for Girls and had been made from broken toys. It was delightful to see reactions from children going in to Kieran’s toy shop on Saturday. They couldn’t believe their eyes! Third place went to the sculpture made for my own shop Heart & Soul. This piece was called ‘Uplift’ and featured a large figure reaching for a golden heart. Just beautiful. Due to the size and nature of the design this piece had to be suspended from the celing. I felt that it really captured the true essence of Heart & Soul.

All the entries really deserved a prize; it was clear so much time and effort had gone into creating them.

Wow, there was so much to see and do. Looking up and down the High Street in the brilliant May sunshine I sensed such a vibrant energy. What a great way to celebrate all the local talent we have close by and lift the spirit of the community? For me that thought was summed up by a newly-wed couple leaving All Saints (one of the Festival venues) the very same day. As their car drove away repeatedly sounding its horn, everyone turned and smiled. Like Lindfield’s very own Mexican wave, there were cheers from the crowd and plenty of waving hands! What a great way to mark such a special moment in time!

I hope that everyone enjoyed the festival as much as I did. More than anything I hope that Leesa and Claire are brave enough to run it again. So, until next year …?
